5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

Winter is upon us already with days getting colder and the temperature dropping even more during the night! 

Unfortunately, we don’t seem to get as much sun as we do the rest of the year and many people have the winter blues.  Unless you are one of those super fit people that spend a lot of time outdoors during winter, chances are you are you are finding yourself feeling lack of energy, lack of motivation and feeling a bit down especially during those cloudy, overcast days.

Most of us also find ourselves eating more dense foods in winter than any other time and gain weight as a result.  In addition to that, most of us try to avoid getting colds and flu at this time of year.  But it’s not all doom and gloom, fortunately we can do some things to combat the winter blues.  Here are 5 tips to beat the winter blues and stay as healthy as possible this winter.

1.       Supplements help to keep the winter bugs away and it’s beneficial to take extra vitamin C as well as a calcium supplement and some good quality multivitamins.  If you are not sure which ones are the best for you, consult your pharmacy or health professional.

2.      Try and spend some time outside doing physical activity such as walking, hiking, cycling or taking the kids to the park and playing ball with them.  I’m sure that you can come up with some more ideas yourself.  We all have our preferences for outdoor activity so find the one you enjoy the most and make sure that you get out there at least twice a week, weather permitting.

3.      Try and cook warming soups that contain a lot of vegetables and use your crockpot in creative ways.  Include as many vegetables as you can with your winter meals and stay away from stodgy deserts that cause weight gain.  If you eat bread, stick to only two slices a day and instead of having loads of mashed potatoes or lots of pasta dishes, try and include variety in your meals. 

4.      If you are one of those people who eat out have takeaway food often, try and reduce it to once a week, your body will thank you for it!  It’s easy to go for take away food when you have been busy all day and realised that you haven’t taken anything out for dinner, I have done that myself at times.  Have a think about some healthier choices you could make instead of automatically heading to your favourite take away.

5.      It helps to stay positive even when you find yourself in a low mood.  Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and do something nice for others.  It’s amazing how satisfying it is to have made a positive difference in someone’s day!  Lastly, think of three things that you are thankful for every day.
